Luigi DelPonte, 98, of 1900 Smith Street, North Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026.
Born in Providence on December 27, 1927, Luigi was the beloved son of the late Pasquale DelPonte and Mary (DeRosa) DelPonte. He was raised in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a deep appreciation for family, community, and his Italian heritage.
Luigi was the devoted husband of Theodora (DeBartolo) DelPonte.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Luigi served his country honorably and was stationed in South Carolina and Guam during his military service.
Following his military service, Luigi dedicated his career to serving his community. He worked at the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center (Quonset Point), where he oversaw transportation operations. He later served the Town of North Providence in its Department of Public Works and proudly served as Doorkeeper for the Rhode Island Senate at the Rhode Island State House, where he was known for his professionalism, distinguished presence, and impeccable dress.
Known to family and friends as "Louie," he earned the nickname "The Count" while growing up on Federal Hill because of his sharp sense of style. He enjoyed playing cards, especially gin and gin rummy, spending time at the North Providence Senior Center, ceramics, telling jokes, and enjoying great food, especially Italian favorites, with family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Gary DelPonte and Cheryl DelPonte; his stepchildren, Arthur Cardente and Angelica Cardente-Vessella; his grandchildren, Vincent Cardente, Brittany Cardente-York, Theadora Vessella-Duhaime, and Thorin Cardente; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Pasquale and Mary (DeRosa) DelPonte; his brothers, Simeone DelPonte, Larry DelPonte, Vincent DelPonte, Joseph DelPonte, and Pasco DelPonte; and his sisters, Madeline DelPonte and Anna Racano.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Mankind Church, 25 Fourth Street, North Providence. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Luigi's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org.
