Joseph C. Angell, 83, of North Providence, passed awayunexpectedly at home on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Jane (Leyden) Angell with whom he shared 63 years of marriage, partnership, and unwavering devotion.
Born in Providence, Joseph was the son of the late Clinton and Nancy (Arbolino) Angell. A proud and accomplished Iron Worker, he was a lifetime member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers, Local 37, where he dedicated 32 years of his life to his trade.
His skilled hands and strong work ethic helped shape many recognizable landmarks in Rhode Island, including Providence Place Mall, the Westin Hotel, the Citizens Bank Building, as well as the expansion of T.F. Green Airport. He also led a number of projects throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Joseph was a master welder who served as a third-year apprenticeship instructor and a welding instructor. In his earlier days, he also owned and operated JA Welding, a small business that reflected his pride in honest work.
Known for being loud, excitable, and always on the move, “Smokin’ Joe” was a no-nonsense, straightforward man who told it like it was. He was knowledgeable, dependable, and fiercely hardworking—a true provider who took immense pride in caring for his home and, above all, his wife. Every morning, without fail, he began his day in prayer, lifting up every person he knew and loved, as well as those he had lost.
Outside of work, Joe enjoyed shooting sports, often spending time at the range with family and friends. He was a proud member of the Smithfield Sportsman Club, where he found both camaraderie and joy. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson for many years, often with and alongside family and friends. Joe even built his own custom motorcycle, yet another project that reflected his enjoyment of working with his hands and building.
In addition to his beloved wife Jane, he is survived by his sons, Joseph T. Angell, John J. Angell, and James D. Angell; his grandchildren, Jillian Angell, Justina Angell, Joseph Reilly Angell, Michaela Angell, Haley Angell, John Angell, and Abby Angell; his great-grandchildren, Mya Angell and Kyla Angell; and his great-great-grandchild, Joziah Jeremiah Angell. He was the brother of the late Thomas Angell.
Joseph’s legacy is one of strength, faith, dedication, and love—a life built with integrity, welded together by hard work, and anchored by family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 10:00 AM, in Mary, Mother of Mankind Church, 25 Fourth Street, North Providence.
