John Markrush, 85, of Johnston, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at The Village at Waterman Lake, Smithfield, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Lena (Fracasso) Markrush. Born in Johnston, he was the son of the late Alex and Mary (Turevich) Markrush.
John had been a lifelong valued employee of Vennerbeck & Clase until retiring in 1985. He proudly served in the Army as a medic and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in action. John was an avid golfer, outdoorsman and a diehard lover of the Boston Red Sox. He was a member of the Smithfield Elks as well as a communicant of St. Thomas Church, Providence.
Besides his wife of sixty-five years, he leaves three sons, John, Michael and Mark Markrush; three daughters, Joyce Kramer, Marcia McCullough and Kathleen Sousa; a sister, Jeanette Rogowski, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Victor Burkevitch, John Burkevitch, Alex Markrush, Olga Iasamone, Jenny Conboy and Helen Parillo.
His funeral will be held Monday at 8am, from the Maceroni Funeral Home 1381 Smith St., North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9am in St. Thomas Church, Fruit Hill Ave., Providence. Visitation Sunday 5-8pm. Burial with Military Honors will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 169 George St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
