Edmund R. Calcagni, 100, of North Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026.Born on April 30, 1926, in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, Edmund was the son of the late Antonio and Maria Calcagni. He was the sixth of ten children.

Edmund was the beloved husband of Eileen Mackin Calcagni and the devoted father of the late Edmund P. Calcagni, Anthony E. Calcagni, and Tara M. Mello. He was also the cherished grandfather of his beloved granddaughter, Angelina Maria Mello.

Early Life and Education

Edmund attended Kenyon Elementary School, Bridgham Junior High School, and Hope High School, graduating in June 1944. During his school years, he developed a lifelong passion for athletics, particularly handball and basketball. He achieved championship honors through St. Ann’s CYO and was later inducted into the Wanskuck Hall of Fame.

In September 1944, Edmund was drafted into military service and served with the Navy and Marine aviation forces in Pensacola, Florida. While stationed at the air base, he was promoted to Aviation Machinist’s Mate and served as a mechanic for Lieutenant Ted Williams of the Marine Corps aviation division.

Following his military service, Edmund continued to pursue his education and professional development. While awaiting admission to college, he completed postgraduate coursework at Hope High School and worked in various positions, including with Campanella and Cardi Construction. He also traveled to Las Vegas for employment opportunities.

His commitment to education remained a defining characteristic throughout his life. Edmund attended Providence College, where he earned a degree in political science. He furthered his studies at Suffolk Law School and Roger Williams College, earning a degree in criminal justice. He also attended Northeastern University, where he received a diploma in automobile appraisal. In addition, he obtained his real estate broker’s license.

A Distinguished Career in Law Enforcement

Edmund’s professional life was defined by his dedication to public service. In 1954, he was accepted into the Providence Police Department, beginning a remarkable career devoted to protecting and serving the citizens of Providence and the State of Rhode Island.

Over the course of 36 years with the Providence Police Department, Edmund advanced through the ranks and ultimately attained the rank of Lieutenant. He began his career in the Patrol Division before finding his professional calling in the Traffic and Motorcycle Division.

As a leader in the division, Edmund worked diligently to expand and modernize its operations. He introduced and developed additional roles, including crossing guards, meter checkers, foot patrol officers, and motorcycle officers. Through his leadership, the division became a highly organized, accountable, and respected unit recognized for its professionalism and commitment to public safety.

Edmund was responsible for coordinating the arrival and security of numerous dignitaries visiting Providence. He oversaw escorts and security arrangements and played an important role in ensuring the safe and orderly operation of major public events throughout the region.

His responsibilities included coordinating security for large-scale festivals, including the Newport Jazz Festival, as well as sporting events, concerts, political gatherings, and events at the Providence Civic Center. Under his direction, his unit became known for its exceptional organization, professionalism, and impeccable appearance.

One of the most significant challenges of Edmund’s career came during the historic blizzard of 1978. He led his team in implementing emergency procedures and coordinated with the Governor and the National Guard to help protect Rhode Island residents during the crisis. Edmund remained in his office for four days, working alongside his team to address the needs of the City of Providence and its citizens.

His dedication to public service was unwavering. He believed deeply in helping others and consistently placed the needs of his community before his own.

A Life of Professional Achievement and Service

In addition to his distinguished career in law enforcement, Edmund pursued several successful professional endeavors. He worked as a licensed real estate broker, owned Hope Industrial Supply, and operated Skipper’s Diner on Hope Street. He also shared his knowledge and experience through teaching.

Edmund was a man of determination, discipline, and integrity. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family. Throughout his life, he remained someone whom others could turn to for guidance, assistance, and support.

Whether through his career in law enforcement, his businesses, or his personal relationships, Edmund made a lasting difference in the lives of countless people. Many continued to approach him throughout his later years to express their gratitude for the help and encouragement he had provided over the course of his life.

A Lasting Legacy

Edmund was a loyal friend who treated others as family. He faced challenges with courage and conviction and remained steadfast in his principles. He was never one to turn away from a difficult situation, particularly when someone needed his help.

He will be remembered for his strong character, unwavering work ethic, generosity, and commitment to the people around him. Above all, Edmund was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and public servant whose influence extended far beyond his professional accomplishments.

Until his final days, Edmund remained grateful for the people who had touched his life and contributed to his journey. He held a deep appreciation for those who supported him throughout his career and helped him achieve his goals.

Edmund R. Calcagni leaves behind a legacy of service, perseverance, and compassion. His memory will live on in the many lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and the community he served so faithfully.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 9 a.m. from Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 639 Mount Pleasant Ave., Providence. Entombment will follow at St. Ann Cemetery, Our Risen Christ Mausoleum, in Cranston. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
