James R. Potter

February 21, 1948 - December 25, 2021

James R. Potter, 73, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021 at Saint Antoine Residence. Born in Providence and raised in Cranston, he was the son of the late Harris H. Potter, Sr. and Marie L. (Grady) Potter. Jim was a proud graduate of Cranston East High School and Roger Williams University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Jim had 12 years of service with the Johnston Police Department, where he attained the rank of Sergeant, and 13 years of service with the North Smithfield Police Department. After his retirement from the police force, he pursued entrepreneurial endeavors through the ownership of two Del's Lemonade franchises in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War era. A loving and devoted father and grandfather, he is survived by his two children, Matthew J. Potter and Karen (Potter) Montecalvo and her husband Keith; and his grandson, Landon J. Montecalvo. He was the brother of William Potter and Marie Adams and the late Robert, Ronald, Harris, David and Jayne Potter and Anne Crossley, in addition to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by his former spouse, Barbara A. (Camera) Potter. Jim was an avid football fan and enjoyed following the New England Patriots, the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He spent many years coaching several youth sports teams in Cranston and Smithfield. What he enjoyed most was spending time with his family and traveling. He was a true representation of a son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Always a steadfast support to family and friends. Mr. Potter's funeral and burial with Military Honors will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to K9s For Warriors, 114 Camp K9 Road, Ponte Verde, FL 32081.
