Reverend Alfred C. Lonardo

Reverend Alfred C. Lonardo, MSW, ACSW, 85, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Serafino and Palmarosa (Imondi) Lonardo.
Reverend Lonardo was ordained for the Diocese of Providence on June 8, 1963 by The Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, D.D., Bishop of Providence. In 1966, he enrolled as Special Student in the Marriage Counseling, Department of Sociology, Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. During this time, he was a member of the Marriage Counseling Staff of the Marriage Counseling Center. He was assigned to Field Placement as a Social Work Student at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland as Paramedical Social Worker on the Social Work Staff of the Comprehensive Child Care Clinic. His Second Year Field Placement was at Catholic Charities of Northern Virginia in the Diocese of Richmond and earned his master’s degree in Social Work in 1969 from Catholic University of America.
Reverend Lonardo was first assigned as Director of Catholic Family Services for the Diocese of Providence in 1969 by Bishop McVinney. In 1975, he was assigned as Head Chaplain of the Catholic Chaplaincy Team of the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston. He was appointed Pastor of Holy Cross Parish, Providence in 1975 and was appointed Pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Cranston in 1986. He was last assigned as Full-Time Associate Pastor of St. Augustine Parish, Parish by Bishop Robert E. Mulvee in 2003 and would later retire in 2007.
Reverend Lonardo is survived by his sister, Dolly Lonardo and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William, Armando, Serafino J., Albert, Michael, Edward, Elia, Celia, Margaret, Marie, Eva and Grace Lonardo.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday Morning, July 14, 2022 in St. Augustine Church, 639 Mount Pleasant Ave., Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11a.m. Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, donations in Reverend Lonardo’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Providence Seminary, 485 Mount Pleasant Ave., Providence, RI 02908.
