Salvatore J. Torregrossa, 86, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Angelina (Niro) Torregrossa, they were married for 59 years.
Born in Providence on July 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Christopher Torregrossa and Anna (Colan) Torregrossa. During WWII, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the 15th Army Airforce’s 450th Bomber Group. He was a veteran of the African, Middle Eastern and European Theatres, participating in 13 bomber missions, including the historic raids on Regensburg and the Ploesti oil fields. At age 19, severely wounded, he was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for valor. Post war, he attended North Eastern University, crafted custom cabinets and furniture in his own shop on Westminster Street and established Circle Plywood Corporation. He lived in North Providence for 55 years and was a member of VFW Post 15041.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Pamela Palumbo and her husband Robert of Narragansett and Lori Fallone and husband Michael of North Providence; two sons, Salvatore J. Torregrossa, Jr. and wife Anne Marie of North Providence and Michael J. Torregrossa; a sister, Janet Torregrossa of Smithfield and his beloved grandchildren, Jessica, Jackie and Samantha Palumbo, Diandra and Michael John Fallone and Nicholas and Anna Torregrossa. He was the brother of the late Christopher, Joseph and Raymond Torregrossa.
Visitation Tuesday morning, 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at the MACERONI FUNERAL HOME, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine Church, Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence. Burial with Military Honors will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or to the VA Medical Center, Patient Activities Fund, 830 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, RI 02903.
