Robert A. Mauro

July 13, 1947 — May 7, 2015

ROBERT A. MAURO, 67, a staunch Democrat and labor leader, died Thursday at home in Providence. Bob, who had politics in his genes, was the nephew of the late State Senate Majority Leader Raymond A. McCabe. At 21, Bob was the youngest member ever elected to a State Constitutional Convention. About 10 years later, he ran for a Senate seat in his Elmwood district. Through the years he used his uncanny political savvy working in local and national elections.

In the 70s, he was manager of Hope’s Bar, where his quick wit amused the politicians, journalists, actors and street people who were patrons. He later worked for the Board of Licenses in Providence, was clerk of the House Committee on Judiciary, and was a member of the 9th Ward Democratic Committee in Providence.

He was senior adjudicator for the State Dept. of Employment and Training. He was President of Local 401 SEIU, and a member of the executive board of the AFLCIO.

A rabid fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, and Providence College basketball, he passed the sports gene on to his son, Marc Mauro, Esq. A rare soul, a wonderful husband and exceptional father, his humor, intelligence, compassion and generosity will be sorely missed. Born July 13, 1947, the was the son of Raymond I. and Rita G. Mauro. He leaves his wife, Louise, son Marc, sister Stephanie McKenna and second son/nephew, Colin.

And, no doubt, he’s already working on someone’s campaign on the other side. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Pius V Church, Eaton St., Providence at 10AM on Wednesday, May 13th. Burial will be private.
