Oscar Angelo Placco

May 25, 1932 — May 10, 2012

On May 10, 2012, Oscar Angelo Placco was embraced in death by his daughter Barbara who passed away in 1986. Oscar was born on June 25, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, to Oscar Frank Placco and Olga (Nast) Placco. He led a life filled with adventure, laughter, meaning and much love.

A graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and Brown University, Oscar received his MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

After serving his country as a Naval Aviator with more than 100 take-offs and landings on the aircraft carrier, The Intrepid, Oscar reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander while serving in the United States Navy.

Employed by both General Electric and Pratt-Whitney as an engineer, Oscar was the developer of the first fuel cells used during the initiation of the US space age. A pioneer for the fledgling space mission to power man to the moon, his life allowed him to travel the world with his wife and family.

Oscar volunteered many hours as a presenter and mentor at Bryant Business College to help small business owners start their ventures. Oscar was an avid skeet shooter, skier and sailor. He laughed easily, hugged heartily and gave love generously. His warmth will be missed by everyone he knew.

He is survived by his much loved wife, Katherine “Bunny” (Holmes) Placco of 54 years, son Christopher Placco, daughter Katherine Haloburdo, son-in-law Donald Haloburdo, and grandson James Placco. He was the brother of the late Robert Placco.

Visitation at the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St. North Providence, Saturday 2-5 p.m. His funeral and burial will be private. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations in Oscar’s name may be made to The Wounded Warrior Foundation ( www.woundedwarriorproject.org )
