Norman R. Hamel, 82, of Smithfield, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Therese (Fontaine) Hamel. Born in Esmond, he was the son of the late William R. and Yvonne (Turcotte) Hamel.

Norman had been a mill worker and machine operator for the former Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Company for 5 years until retiring in 1995. He was an Air Force Veteran of WWII , and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Andre J. Hamel, David Hamel, Norman Hamel and Michael Hamel; five daughters, Teri Featheiston, Twihla Halvorson , Jo Ann Cole and her husband Donald, Denise Themuda and Diane Deware; two brothers, Leo Hamel and Gerard “Gus” Hamel, a sister, Rita D’Arezzo, twenty two grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Robert Hamel and the brother of the late William R. Hamel and Donald Hamel.

His funeral will be held Thursday at 8:30am, from the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Ave., Greenville. Visitation Wednesday 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
