Luis Alberto Sousa

Luis A. Sousa, 75, of Providence, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at home surrounded by his family, after battling cancer for three years. He was the beloved husband of Rosa G. Sousa. Born in 1939 in São Miguel, Portugal, Mr. Sousa graduated from the National School of Agriculture (ERA) in 1960 and served in the Portuguese Armed Forces. He traveled the world prior to marrying his wife in 1969. They lived in Lisbon, Coimbra and São Miguel until settling in the United States with his family in 1977.
Mr. Sousa worked as an Agricultural Engineer in Macau, China for five years; as an English Professor at CIAL, Centro de Línguas in Coimbra, Portugal and helped found the Universidade dos Açores, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, where he also served as an Invited Professor of English. In the United States, Mr. Sousa worked at Lifespan for 35 years. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Sousa served as the Director of Central Research Facilities and, in appreciation for his expertise and leadership, the Lifespan Barrier Facility was dedicated in his honor upon its completion in 2013.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, besides his wife, he leaves his adoring children, Daniel F. Sousa, MD and his wife Theresa; his daughter, Susana F. Conklin and his four cherished grandchildren, Sebastian, Sidney, Skiler and Scarlet. Mr. Sousa is also survived by his brothers, Renato Borges de Sousa and his wife Biota, of Lisbon, Portugal and John P. Sousa and his wife Stella, of Cumberland; along with loving cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many others whose lives he enriched.
During his life, Mr. Sousa was a travel enthusiast, visiting 33 countries and 38 of the United States throughout his lifetime. His most favored times were spent in Cape Cod during the summer months with his family, swimming the waters of the Caribbean and enjoying authentic jazz music in New Orleans.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith Street, North Providence. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 10 AM at St. Pius V Church, Eaton St., Providence. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the National Children’s Cancer Society at www.thenccs.org .
