Louis J. Mazzucchelli, D.D.S., Age 79, of Providence, RI, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at The Miriam Hospital in the presence of his loving family. He was the husband of Thelma (DiLibero) Mazzucchelli.

“Dr. Mazz,” as he was affectionately known, was born on March 1,1932 in Providence, RI, the son of the late Egisto and Adalaine (Guerriero) Mazzucchelli. He was a 1949 graduate of La Salle Academy, received degrees from the University of Rhode Island in 1953 and Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1959, and attended the Boston University School of Advanced Dental Studies. At LaSalle he was a member of the varsity hockey and football teams. While attending the University of Rhode Island he was a member of the Beta Psi Alpha fraternity and the ROTC program. Upon graduation he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1953 to 1955 at Fort Gordon, GA.
Dr. Mazzucchelli was a member of the American Dental Society, the Rhode Island State Dental Society, The Cranston District Dental Society, and The Pierre Fauchard Academy.
He taught at the URI School of Dental Hygiene from 1962 to 1972 and was a member of the Providence School Committee from 1968 to 1971. He also served as a past board member of the Providence Figure Skating Club. During his professional life he participated in the Donated Dental Services Program in Rhode Island.
As a youth he displayed a talent for drawing and had hoped to emulate the sports illustrator Frank Lanning, whom he greatly admired. In his later years he broadened his talents and was an ardent watercolorist. As an adventurous connoisseur of food, Chinese cooking was one of his fondest hobbies. He enjoyed competition and was a member of the Metacomet Country Club for twenty years, where he won the Senior Club Championship in 1994.
He leaves his family with happy memories of summer vacations in Narragansett and skiing trips to Vermont.
Although sports, art, and cooking were his hobbies, his greatest love was for his wife of fifty-five years and their four children. He is survived by sons Louis J. Mazzucchelli, Jr. and his wife, Susan Paffrath, of Providence, David J. Mazzucchelli and his wife, Richmond Lewis of Wakefield, Robert J. Mazzucchelli of Sarasota, FL, and daughter, Linda Mazzucchelli Tilden and her husband Peter G.
