Josephine Ann Sullivan

March 16, 1916 — May 3, 2006

SULLIVAN, JOSEPHINE ANN (CARNEVALE), 90, of Providence, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Elmhurst Extended Care. She was the wife of the late Joseph H. Sullivan. A lifelong resident of Providence, she was the daughter of the late Felice and Maria A. (Lepore) Carnevale.

Josephine had worked as a secretary in the Governor’s office during the administrations of Governors’ J. Joseph Garrahy, Frank Licht and Philip Noel. She has also worked on many City and State Committees and Councils, including the Governor’s Commission to Study Low-Income Housing and Progress for Providence and was appointed to the City Wide Tenants Affairs Board by the Mayor of Providence. She was also an active participant in the Democratic Party in both governmental and campaign capacities. She summered at Roy Carpenter’s Beach and was an active member of the Tenants Association. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church and Blessed Sacrament Church, both in Providence and was an avid gardener. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and a devoted grandmother and great grandmother.

She leaves two sons, Dennis J. Sullivan and his wife Dawn and James E. Sullivan and his wife Kimberly; three daughters, Sharon A. Marr and her husband Thomas, Kathleen Kells and her husband, Lincoln Police Chief Robert T. Kells and Mary E. LaChance and her husband David; four sisters, her twin, Rosemarie Hinckley, Phyllis Pilkington, Theresa Albanese and Evelyn Cafferty; fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Mary Bibeault, Victoria Rocchio and Rev. Thomas J. Carnevale, former director of St. Domenic Savio Youth Center.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday at 10am in St. Thomas Church, Fruit Hill Ave., Providence. VISITATION Friday 4-7pm. in the MACERONI Funeral Home 1381 Smith St., North Providence. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Elmhurst Extended Care, 50 Maude St., Providence, R.I. 02908.
