Edward G. Metcalf, Jr.

METCALF, Edward G. Jr., 88 of Douglas Avenue North Providence died peacefully at his home with his wife and two sons. He was the son of the late Edward G. and Grace (Harry) Metcalf.

Ted was a Rhode Island radio and television pioneer. He worked at WJAR from 1939 to 1963 with a hiatus for military service. He went from radio announcer to television newsman and personality. He did the first television newscast in the state and went on to host 'Today in New England' which was the local insert into the Dave Garroway 'Today' Show.

After WJAR he worked for NBC Monitor. He was the NBC voice of the America’s Cup for several years and eventually worked for the state Department of Economic Development.

He helped develop the Rhode Island Film Commission and worked with several film production companies.

He was a Captain in the Army Air Corps and B-17 pilot. He also served as a Special Services Officer coordinating public relations with Hollywood and the Army.

He was a superb horseman and one time polo player. He loved fishing with his sons and was very active with Boy Scouts Narragansett Council, as both his sons became Eagle Scouts at Troop 76.

During his long broadcast career he had occasion to interview Presidents, Kings, Movie Stars and hundreds of local newsmakers and politicians. For many years he worked on both WJAR radio and WJAR TV.

Ted was shop steward for the IBEW, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and assorted sports car and equestrian organizations.

Ted is survived by his adoring wife of 59 years, Gloria (Marciano), and his two devoted sons, Geoffrey M. Metcalf of Sacramento California and Gregory M. Metcalf of Kennebunk Maine, Linda B. Metcalf, daughter-in-law, brother William Metcalf and his grandson Chandler. He was the brother of the late Frederick Metcalf.

The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the MACERONI Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Cranston St., Cranston. VISITATION Sunday 4-7 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America Narragansett Council, Yawgoog Scout Reservation, Hopkinton, RI 02883.
