Barbara A. Holmes, 98, died Thursday, January 27, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late John “Eddie” Holmes.

She was the daughter of the late Stephen & Alice White. Barbara was the cherished mother of Katherine “ Bunny” Placco & son –in -law Oscar of North Providence and Stephen E. Holmes and his wife Mary Ann of Melbourne, Florida.

She was the loving Grandmother to the late Barbara Holmes Placco and to Christopher Placco of Providence and to Katie Haloburdo and her husband Donald of Ocean Grove, N.J..

The pride of her life was the gift of a great Grandson, James Maxwell Placco. Many hours were spent on “little Nanny’s” bed reading fairy tales and creating imaginary castles.

Her extended family includes Melissa & David Jensen and their two children Brianna and Zachary; Darlene Spitzer and her son Elijah, & Sharon and Jan Surma and their sons Adam and Noah.

Barbara worked for many years as a buyer for Peerless Co. in Pawtucket. In later years she managed a boutique dress shop in Taunton, Ma. and with her friend and owner Ms.T. Goldstein, made many trips to New York buying for the shop. She was actively involved in the Republican Party.

Barbara was a very special lady. The last few years were contentedly spent at Tockwotton Home, Providence, which is in the East Side neighborhood close to the old Holmes family residence she loved so much.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 9 a.m., from the MACERONI FUNERAL HOME, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 92 Hope St., Providence. Visitation Monday 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Saint Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara Holmes name to the Tockwotton Home, 75 East St. Providence, RI 02903.
